Excerpt:

The harsh cutting clunk of the engine startled Journey. She looked behind her and, in the distance, saw the other boat. Time wasn’t her friend.

The captain dropped anchor, and she and the cadets left their perch and headed to the keel to meet the rest of the team. She gazed at the indigo ocean and watched as the waves continued to slap the settling boat. There was no turning back. Her fate was sealed. What would she say? And would he listen this time?

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. How many times do I have to say it for you to accept my apology?”

     “Apology?” Valtteri shouted.

She flinched. Valtteri never raised his voice.

“You think a simple I’m sorry will absolve you? You left me there, standing before the exalted priestess, a fool waiting for you, when you had no intention of ever coming. I’m sorry,” he repeated, his anger intensifying each time he threw her words in her face. “What are you sorry for? Hmmm…let’s see. I’m sorry for humiliating you…in front of the council…in front of the hundreds of guests? Worse, the entire kingdom? Did I twist your arm? Were you coerced into agreeing to marry me in any way?”

“Of course not.” She loved him and would never stop loving him.

“No? Well, you seemed to have changed your mind then, haven’t you? And by the looks of it,” he said, waving an angry hand at the wedding dress she still wore, “you decided today, of all days, was a good time to tell me.”

She hadn’t, not in the way he meant. “I’m doing this for you.”

He scoffed, his distain-filled laughter shredding her heart.

“You’re breaking off our engagement, on our wedding day, for me? Could you be any more selfish?”

He was wrong, but she couldn’t tell him that, now could she. “I would make you a terrible wife, and worse,” she said, knowing how much like her father he was, “I’d make a terrible queen.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. We’ve been happy,” he argued. “The kingdom adores you.”

It was true because, of course, they were happy, and the kingdom had come to if not accept her, at least accept her most embarrassing lack of a filter. She needed a better argument.

“And I…I don’t want children,” something she knew, that as an only child, he was desperate to have. “I don’t like kids. They’re fine for other people but not me.”

“Children? You didn’t have a problem telling me how much fun we’d have making them,” he said, clearly not buying her excuses.

“That was the great sex talking. Children annoy me. And…and I can’t imagine raising someone like me. I’ve been a terrible daughter.” That was an understatement.

“It’s like I don’t even know you,” he said, her words starting to take effect. “Where’s the person who brought me to life?”

She winced, his words a dagger to her soul. Could he make her feel more guilty? His parents’ deaths had left their mark, and only with her had he been able to let the pain go so he could heal. And here she was, cutting him all over again.

“I’m sorry it took me this long to figure it. You deserve better. The kingdom deserves better.”

“You’re right.” Then he stormed out of the room.

Journey squeezed her eyes shut, knowing she could never tell him the truth.
